The first EA day I attended has been and a good aday , numbers were low so beginners got almost one to one tuition and from the comments all of them wre going to take up the sport , great news. As an aside there was a huge hatch of damsels with the browns leaping right out of te water to get their quarry. Every reed had a Damsel shuck or Dragonfly shuck attached truely spectacular.
The second day was the Salmon and Trout Association Junior day held at Exe Valley Trout fishery again not huge numbers only six including my daughter Emily.
The instructors on the day were myself and John Dawson. John has awealth of experience and well worth contacting , if I am not available of course! I would have no question in recommending John to anyone. All the children caught two fish and Emily managed a Grayling on an Adams Para from on eof the lakes. So if there is a junior in the House aged 9- 16 go to the link on the events page and book up for Highhampton.

Many of the rivers are now open and salmon have been rumoured to be in the river Exe. Still waters are starting to show good acytivity everythinhg is looking good for the summer. With the clocks going forward evening tuition is now an option starting at 5.00pm.
On a recent trip to Hollies trout farm I managed to land a cracking double figured fish which really pulled my string. It took a Saye Saviour on the bottom with a very light take but an explosive fight.
The over wintered Rainbow came in at 14lbs and was caught on Friday 26 March 2010 . If you are wondering what a saye saviour looks like here is the tying
Hook-
size 12 short shank
Silk- Black
Body- olive wool or Chennile
Rib- Gold fine wire
Hackle-black cock with Olive micro flash strands
Head -Goldhead bead.
Fish with slow long draw, good for stalking fish, and will be taken on the drop too
So it is time to dust off the kit and enjoy the fishing in Devon.

The junior and senior Trout Masters Fishery Final took place at Hollies on the 7th March 2010. It was a crisp clear but very cold day and the fisherman arrive at 8.30 for the competition. Among them two juniors to battle it out for the Fishery title, Ruairidh Morrison and my own daughter Emily. Ruairidh won the competition last year and I have been teaching him for 2 years and Emily only 10 years old has been fishing with me off and on for 4 or more but is only now strong enough to handle a rod properly.
So on a day when even the seniors struggled both did very well to catch fish and the final decision came down to the points awarded The result a narrow win for Emily who was delighted with her fish and her title. Only one fish a piece during the competion but after Ruairidh went on to take another before I went home.
A big thank you to Robert for organising the competion and running it so smoothly and well done to all the fishermen who took part and made it so enjoyable for the juniors as well.

The new season is nearly on us, so why not treat yourself to a lesson or two to get the rust out of those arms, improve your technique or learn a new sport. Winter fishing on the lakes for Rainbows can be great sport and the cold weather seems to bring out the best in the fish. Fry pattern and slow nymphs on the bottom work well. Don't forget the fabulous Grayling you can still fish for them on the rivers as they fall under the course season.
I would recommend that you have a look at the February edition of total Fly fishing where the articles will give you that extra help in the cold, others to look out for are Trout Fisherman , and Flyfishing & Flytying. Each has its own style and I swap and change depending on the content, there is always something to learn. There is still time to tie a few flies too.
If there is a birthday coming up gift certificate can still be bought so give me a bell.
02 February 2010
Christams is a couple of weeks away so why not treat some one to a day or half days fly fishing instruction, or even a couple of hours.
Certificates can be personalised to the recipients name and can include any message you would like to have. Give me a call to discuss your needs and don't forget birthdays too.
I will try to get them to you before Christmas depending on the postal service so get your order in soon.
Merry Christmas to you all

Welcome to the new web site. It has been a quiet season this year with some memorable highlights to mention. In particular one of my junior clients Ruairidh Morrison not only won the Junior trout masters trophy at the Hollies trout Farm Fish off but also managed to bag himself his first double Trout. Weighing in at 11lbs 7oz, the fish was stalked and took a killer bug at a time in the season when snails were the fishes mainstay.

This season saw Hollies change hands, with Eric and Fiona moving out of the business and Robert Snaith taking over. I can report that the fishery is in good hands. Robert has already opened the course fishing lake to Trout for the winter and while it is tricky to cast it is fun all the same. Welcome to Devon Robert.
The ladies of the Southwest fishing for Life charity celebrated their first anniversery at Wimbleball and my congratulations goes out to them and the fabulous work being done and for such fun, I look forward to next season.
All that remains is to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and hope to see you in the new year. Tight Lines
